Peter J. Hoffman is an Associate Professor of International Affairs at The New School, leading the Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs (GPIA) and directing the United Nations Summer Study. He holds a PhD from The Graduate Center of CUNY and an MA from The New School for Social Research.
His research focuses on conflict analysis, humanitarianism, and global governance, with emphasis on the dynamics of war, international humanitarian systems, and U.S. foreign policy. Notable works include Humanitarianism, War and Politics: Solferino to Syria and Beyond (2018), and ongoing projects on humanitarian security practices and security cultures in conflict analysis.
He has consulted for NGOs like the Fund for Peace and Open Society Foundations and contributed to the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty. Hoffman is also a Research Fellow at the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, CUNY.
He teaches courses such as Global Governance (Fall 2025), The Evolution of Warfare (Fall 2025), and United Nations & World Order (Summer 2025). His upcoming work includes studies on culturally-driven security knowledge and private military contractors in humanitarian contexts.
