Ori Swed is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at Texas Tech University and director of the Peace, War, & Social Conflict Lab, specializing in non-state actors within global conflict systems including private military companies, terrorist organizations, and humanitarian actors.
His academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin
- M.A. in History from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem
- Dual B.A. in History and Sociology from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem
Swed's research integrates political sociology with security studies to analyze organizational dynamics in war zones, focusing on privatized warfare, human security frameworks, and the geopolitical impact of non-state military entities. His work examines how private military contractors, violent non-state groups, and aid organizations reshape conflict landscapes through technological innovation and strategic adaptation.
Analysis of his recent publications (2023-2025) reveals three dominant research trajectories: Russian mercenary operations in African conflicts (particularly Wagner Group effectiveness), drone warfare proliferation to non-state actors, and cyber-enabled influence operations including troll networks and disinformation campaigns. These interconnected themes demonstrate his methodological approach combining organizational theory with empirical conflict analysis.
Swed currently leads two major research initiatives: comprehensive mapping of the global private military and security industry ecosystem, and systematic analysis of terrorist organizations' media strategies and their societal impacts through the Peace, War, & Social Conflict Lab research teams.
