Sophie Layfield is a Senior Lecturer in Midwifery at the University of Worcester's School of Nursing and Midwifery, Department of Midwifery. She serves as module leader for the Midwifery MSc and BSc programmes and plays a key role in student recruitment. She is joint-lead for the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) at the University, organizing programme accreditations, audits, and events like Breastfeeding Awareness Week. She holds the UNICEF Baby Friendly Leadership Qualification (2020).
Her research and teaching focus includes infant feeding, breastfeeding advocacy, normal birth practices, hypnobirthing, and complementary therapies. She contributes to professional midwifery discourse through articles in The Practising Midwife, with recent publications on oxytocin physiology and orgasmic birth. She also conducts book reviews and participates in educational reviews for local maternity systems.
Her professional roles extend to board membership of The Practising Midwife and project work for the Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS). She actively engages in initiatives to improve maternal and neonatal care practices.
