Sona Patel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Seton Hall University. Her research focuses on auditory-neural mechanisms of voice control and emotional prosody in neurotrauma, including Parkinson's disease, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), and right hemisphere stroke. She also serves as the Assistant Provost for Academic Excellence and Assessment and holds leadership roles in academic committees.
- Ph.D., University of Florida, Communication Sciences and Disorders (2009)
- MA, University of Florida, Communication Sciences and Disorders (2008)
Dr. Patel's research explores sensorimotor integration in speech production, speech rehabilitation, and the neurological basis of emotion communication in clinical populations. She has secured multiple grants from federal and state agencies, including the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) and New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research (NJCBIR).
Her recent publications analyze speech error rates post-concussion, neural responses to voice training, and prosody deficits in Parkinson's disease and stroke. These works highlight applications of speech analysis in diagnosing and rehabilitating neurological conditions.
- Merit Award, Seton Hall University (2023)
- MS Student Research Project Award (Amber Lieto), Seton Hall SHMS (2023)
- Meritorious Poster Award, ASHA (2021)
- Undergraduate Research Award, Seton Hall University (2020)
Dr. Patel has led or co-led over $500,000 in grants, including studies on speech indicators for concussion recovery, affective prosody rehabilitation, and disease detection. She actively participates in academic service, such as the ASHA Research and Scientific Affairs Committee and NIH grant review panels.
