Dr. Sjors Ligthart is an Associate Professor at Tilburg Law School’s Department of Criminal Law and a postdoc researcher at Utrecht University under the NWO Vici-grant LENC. His research focuses on neurolaw, criminal law, and the ethical implications of neurotechnology in criminal justice. He holds a cum laude PhD from Tilburg University (2021) and has secured grants including the 2024 Veni Grant (NWO) for his project on mental liberty in modern technology.
Education: Master’s in Criminal Law (cum laude, Tilburg University), PhD in Criminal Law (cum laude, Tilburg University).
Research interests include neurotechnology’s impact on human rights, mental privacy, and the legal frameworks governing emerging technologies. His recent work explores the absolute nature of freedom of thought in light of neurotechnological advancements.
Grants: 2024 Veni Grant (NWO) for the 'Mental Liberty in the Age of Modern Technology' project; 2022 KNAW Early Career Partnership Award.
Advising: Co-promotor for PhD students researching neurotechniques in criminal justice, AI liability, and mental integrity.
