Naomi van de Pol serves as both a PhD Candidate and Lecturer at Utrecht University's Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology within the School of Law. Her academic journey began with dual Bachelor's degrees in Law and Liberal Arts and Sciences (magna cum laude, 2020), followed by a Master's in Criminal Law (cum laude, 2021), both from Utrecht University.
Her research centers on human rights protection for the mind in criminal justice contexts, specifically examining neurotechnology applications for recidivism prediction through the lens of fundamental rights. As Managing Editor of the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights (NQHR) since 2023, she shapes scholarly discourse on emerging human rights challenges.
Recent publications reveal a clear trajectory analyzing neurotechnology's intersection with European human rights law, particularly Article 3 ECHR prohibitions against inhuman treatment. Her work progresses from foundational analyses of neurointerventions in criminal justice (2022) toward sophisticated examinations of mental integrity, freedom of thought, and neurorights frameworks (2023-2025).
