Siân Pooley is a Tutor in Modern British History at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on social and cultural history of 19th- and 20th-century Britain, particularly childhood, family dynamics, and social policies. She examines how individuals and communities navigated social change through personal experiences and relationships. Current projects include analyzing children’s creative works published in pre-WWII media and studying adversity’s impact on lifelong resilience.
Teaching includes undergraduate and postgraduate modules on British history from 1815 to the 20th century, theories of historical methodology, and gender studies. She supervises DPhil students in modern British social and cultural history.
She collaborates with the Centre for the History of Childhood and the Centre for Women’s, Gender and Queer Histories, exploring themes of identity, emotions, and subjectivity. Her work bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches to understanding societal evolution.
