Professor Kathryn Gleadle is a Professor of Gender and Women's History at Mansfield College, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on British political culture, women and children's experiences in the 18th and 19th centuries, and gendered dynamics of civic engagement. She is affiliated with the Centre for Women’s, Gender and Queer Histories and the Centre for the History of Childhood. Her work challenges traditional political narratives by centering marginalized groups, such as women and children, and incorporates feminist theories from sociology and psychology.
Her notable publication, Borderline Citizens, analyzes women’s political activities in 19th-century Britain, emphasizing rural experiences and archival research. She is currently writing a book on girlhood manuscript cultures and civic life, examining diaries from the long 19th century. She teaches courses on British history, gender, and citizenship, including 'British V 1685-1830' and 'Women, gender and nation: Britain, 1789-1825.'
Professor Gleadle supervises DPhil students in areas like childhood studies, gender history, and women’s political engagement. Her research centers also foster interdisciplinary work on emotions, identity, and subjectivity.
