Dr. Jill Liddington is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Sociology and Social Policy within the Faculty of Social Sciences. Her expertise centers on women’s history, particularly the interplay of gender and class in 19th and 20th century Britain. She previously held roles in the School of Continuing Education (1982–2005) and is now based at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies (CIGS).
Her research focuses on the British suffrage movement and the diaries of Anne Lister, a 19th-century landowner whose extensive writings offer insights into queer identity, class dynamics, and regional history. Key publications include Presenting the Past: Anne Lister of Halifax (2018), Vanishing for the Vote (2014), and One Hand Tied Behind Us (1978, co-authored).
Her work bridges historical analysis with gender studies, examining themes like suffrage activism, diary-as-historical-source methodology, and the socio-cultural context of 19th-century Britain. She contributes to interdisciplinary research through CIGS and maintains professional affiliations with the Royal Historical Society and Women’s History Network.
