Chris Roulston is a Professor at Western University's Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies and French Studies. His academic specialization includes Anne Lister studies, queer theory, feminist theory, and eighteenth-century women's literature. He is currently working on a monograph exploring queer nostalgia and colonialism in girls' boarding school narratives (1933-2023). Roulston holds an MA and PhD, with research interests spanning literary analysis, historical archives, and queer historiography.
His publications include Decoding Anne Lister: From the Archives to Gentleman Jack (2023) and Narrating Marriage in Eighteenth-Century England and France (2010). Recent articles focus on queer temporalities, boarding school narratives, and adaptations of queer history into modern media. Roulston’s work often intersects with poststructuralist theory and colonial studies, analyzing how queer identities are constructed through literature and archives.
His research on Dorothy Strachey’s Olivia examines queer desire and translation, while his analysis of Mme de Graffigny critiques marital representations in eighteenth-century contexts. Roulston’s scholarship bridges historical texts with contemporary queer frameworks, emphasizing the interplay between past and present narratives.
