Dr. Matthew Grimley is an Associate Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Merton College. His research and teaching focus on religion, politics, and intellectual life in 20th-century Britain. He explores how religious perspectives influenced political and social debates despite declining religious observance.
Research interests include religion and social reconstruction in post-war Britain, changing ideas of the state, and British national identity. His monograph Citizenship, Community, and the Church of England (2004) examines Anglican influences on inter-war political thought and welfare state concepts. Current projects include a book on religion and social reconstruction during WWII and its aftermath.
Teaching covers British history from 1815 to the present, including modules on British films, 1970s politics, and political ideologies. He supervises DPhil students in modern British history and welcomes inquiries from potential doctoral candidates.
Current DPhil students include Gabrielle Davies (Merton College), Michael Nixon (Lincoln College), and Kyle Siwek. His work integrates religious history with broader societal themes like multiculturalism and national identity.
