Will Pooley is an Associate Professor in Modern History at the University of Bristol's Department of History. He holds a BA, MA, MST, and DPhil from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on French social and cultural history from the 18th-20th centuries, specializing in witchcraft, folklore, and creative historical methodologies.
Pooley investigates intersections between witchcraft conflicts and modern societal transformations in France, exploring how medical, legal, and scientific developments influenced occult beliefs. His work emphasizes body-centered experiences of modernization and collaborative historical storytelling through non-traditional formats like theatre and comics.
He directs the MA History program and supervises postgraduate research on French history, criminal justice, folklore, and creative practice. His publications consistently engage with witchcraft's modern manifestations and experimental historiography.
