Sirpa Wrede is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with both the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Swedish School of Social Science. She leads the Migration, Care and Ageing (MICA) research group under the Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care (2018–2025) and serves as Vice Leader of the same center. Her work focuses on globalization, welfare states, migration, and intersectional analyses of health and care systems.

Research Interests: Wrede examines how migration, digitalization, and neoliberal reforms reshape care work, healthcare professions, and social inequalities. Her studies span comparative analyses of maternity care, medico-managerial cultures, and the social sustainability of eldercare systems. Recent projects highlight digital exclusion among older migrants and structural barriers in welfare states.
Scientific Contributions: Her recent publications (2023–2025) analyze digitalization’s impact on healthcare access, ethnic hierarchies in care work, and poverty among Russian-speaking migrants in Finland. Articles emphasize qualitative comparative methods, transnational family dynamics, and the interplay between policy conditionality and migrant precarity.
