Simona Busni is an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities at the University of Catania, where she teaches Cinema, Photography, Radio, Television, and Digital Media. She holds a PhD in Cinema from the University of Calabria and has taught at the University of Salento and the University of Calabria. Her research spans Italian cinema, melodrama, gender representation, and digital media. She is the Principal Investigator of the project 'MA\'AM - MAjesty And Media' (2022–present) and has conducted research in France at Sorbonne universities.
Her research interests include:
- Italian and European cinema
- Gender and representation in film
- Michelangelo Antonioni and auteur theory
- Transmediality and digital storytelling
- Neorealism and cinematic realism
- Contemporary audiovisual culture
She has published two acclaimed monographs: The Voice of Women. The Unknown Women of Melodrama, from Galatea to Lucia Bosè (2018) and Michelangelo Antonioni. The Sceptical Alienist (2019), which won the 2020 Limina Prize. She is an editor and board member of several journals, including L'avventura, Fata Morgana, and Fata Morgana Web.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- 2020 Limina Prize for best Italian book on cinema studies
She actively supervises graduate theses on diverse topics ranging from Hitchcock and Kubrick to neorealism, transmedia storytelling, and gender politics in film. She has led research groups on Italian cinematic representation and has been involved in national research projects. She also conducts research in France and maintains strong international scholarly connections.
