Giovanna Santaera is a Research Fellow at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania, since March 2024. Her work is funded by the PRIN 2023 project "CAOS – Catastrophes of Southern Italy. Photogénie and remediation of natural disasters" under the supervision of Scientific Director Simona Busni. Previously, she was a Research Fellow for the PRIN 2020 project "Phototexts. Rhetoric, poetics and cognitive aspects" (Catania unit, Scientific Director: Maria Rizzarelli).
- Education: PhD in Heritage and Cultural Production Sciences (University of Catania, 2022) with thesis "Cinema transmitted: media, museums and visual culture"
- Editorial Role: Member of the editorial board of the journal Arabeschi (2018–present)
Her research focuses on audiovisual narratives and their heritages, intermediality, digital media, and cultural/social issues. Recent projects include:
- Photogènie of Fire (PRIN 2023): Analyzing volcanic and seismic imagery in Southern Italian cinema.
- Phototexts (PRIN 2020): Creating a digital platform for Italian photo-textual production.
