Simon Morrissey is an Associate Professor in the Department of ACE - Art and Design at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), where he serves as Module Leader for undergraduate art programs and Fine Arts Degree Show co-ordinator. A curator and contemporary art consultant, his practice centers on people-place relationships as generators of curatorial narratives.
Education:
- MA European Cultural Policy & Administration, University of Warwick (1993)
- BA (2:1 Hons) History, University of Warwick (1989-1992)
His research investigates how interactions with people and place inform curatorial frameworks, with expertise in public art commissioning, participatory co-creation methodologies, and community-engaged art practices. He examines how locations are recorded and narrated across Architecture, Fine Art, and Geography disciplines.
Morrissey directs Foreground (founded 2007), which commissions community-based artworks funded by Arts Council England and Henry Moore Foundation. His 2019 Science Museum Group project engages Wiltshire communities with the National Collection Centre. In 2018, he established UWE Bristol's Document and Location research group to critically analyze place-space discourses.
He develops professional practice strategies for emerging artists and curators, with extensive editorial contributions to Tate Publishing, ICA London, and international institutions since 1994.
