Dr Nicky Sim is a Research Fellow in Art Partnerships at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the Department of ACE – Creative and Cultural Industries. Their work focuses on research, knowledge exchange, and professional development within the UWE-Spike Island partnership.
They hold a PhD in Education from the University of Nottingham, an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths, University of London, a BA in Art History from the University of Nottingham, and a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design from the University of Gloucestershire.
Their research explores the role of artists and arts institutions in civic life, particularly in education, youth work, social care, and public spaces. They are deeply engaged in equitable, inclusive, and critically reflective partnership models across sectors. Their work is informed by principles of Disability Justice and integrates academic, professional, and lived experience.
Nicky has collaborated with major institutions including Tate, South London Gallery, Battersea Arts Centre, Chisenhale Art Place, Create, and Oasis Adventure Playground. They work with creative consultant Tara Brown on projects such as Barmy Army (commissioned by Manchester International Festival), centering youth-led art and mental health reform. They are also leading a five-year evaluation of the Freelands Artist Programme across the UK.

Previously, Nicky served as Curator of Public Programmes and Schools Officer at Whitechapel Gallery, managing events, exhibitions, and residency programs. Their work bridges academic research, curatorial practice, and community engagement.
