Stephen Monger

Stephen Monger serves as Associate Director of Design Communication (0.5 FTE) and Programme Leader for MA Graphic Arts (0.5 FTE) at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) within the ACE - Art and Design school. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he maintains extensive consultancy work across UK institutions including Open University, UCA Farnham, Falmouth University, and University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Monger also teaches at the Open College of the Arts for online graphic design degrees.

His academic background includes an MA Advanced Practice & Theories: Photographic Studies (Derby 1997-1998) and BA(Hons) Design: Photography (Exeter 1993-1995). Monger began teaching at UWE in 2003 and has developed research interests spanning photography, graphic design, 3D printing, architectural models, and urban regeneration. His practice explores how social, political, local, and international events manifest in physical environments through projects like the Weston-super-Mare regeneration documentation and 'Weston Phoenix' series inspired by the 2010 Icelandic volcano eruption.

Monger's publications from 2002-2012 reveal consistent thematic development in visual documentation of urban transformation, with increasing integration of digital technologies. His work demonstrates how photography intersects with architectural studies and graphic communication to document built environment changes.

As an experienced external examiner, Monger advises academic programs across multiple institutions.
