Professor Simon Gilbody is Professor of Psychological Medicine & Psychiatric Epidemiology at the University of York and Foundation Professor of Psychological Medicine at the Hull York Medical School (HYMS). He served as founding Director of the York Mental Health & Addictions Research Group (MHARG) from 2005-2023. As a leading clinical epidemiologist and population health scientist, his work bridges clinical practice and population-level mental health research.
- Higher Doctorate (DSc, York 2022) in Clinical Epidemiology
- Elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2023)
- Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners (2019)
- Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (2009)
Professor Gilbody's research takes a population approach to mental health, conducting epidemiological studies, evidence syntheses, and clinical trials to promote effective, efficient, and equitable NHS mental health services. His work spans three key areas: tackling health inequalities in mental health services (particularly addressing the 20-year life expectancy gap for people with schizophrenia), taking a lifecourse approach to mental health through the Born in Bradford cohort study, and ensuring the primary care perspective in mental health through trials like CASPER and BASIL. His research has significantly influenced NHS policy, particularly in smoking cessation for people with severe mental illness and depression prevention.
His recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on behavioral activation interventions, mental health during the pandemic, health inequalities, and methodological advances in mental health measurement. The BASIL+ trial represents one of the largest ever trials of psychological interventions for depression prevention.

Professor Gilbody has secured substantial funding from NIHR, UKRI, Wellcome Trust, and other major research councils. As Chief Investigator, he has led some of the largest pragmatic trials in mental health, including the CASPER, REEACT, SCIMITAR, and BASIL trial programs. He directs the UKRI Closing the Gap Network+ and has established the Closing the Gap Cohort of over 10,000 people with severe mental illness. His work has directly influenced NHS policy and practice, particularly in smoking cessation for people with severe mental illness and depression prevention strategies.
As founding Director of MHARG (2005-2023), Professor Gilbody built a world-leading research group focused on mental health and addiction. His team works closely with the Yorkshire and Humber Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) and has extended its work internationally through the NIHR IMPACT Global Trials Group. The Closing the Gap Cohort serves as a foundation for multiple interventional studies addressing the physical health of people with severe mental illness.
