Della Bailey is a Research Fellow in Health Sciences at the University of York with extensive clinical experience in both the voluntary sector and NHS. She developed services for those experiencing dementia and their carers, and was instrumental in the early development of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service. Prior to her research career, she lectured on the IAPT Psychological Practitioner training course.
Her research focuses on behavioral activation and self-help interventions for common mental health problems, particularly among vulnerable populations. She specializes in developing accessible written materials for guided self-help, smoking cessation programs for people with severe mental illness, and collaborative care models for depression treatment. Her expertise includes adapting interventions for older adults with depression and long-term conditions, as well as for refugees and asylum seekers.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on behavioral activation approaches to address depression, anxiety, and social isolation, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work spans multiple populations including older adults with long-term conditions, frontline NHS workers, and refugees/asylum seekers. She frequently collaborates on large-scale trials examining the effectiveness of psychological interventions in real-world settings.
