Dr. Masuma Mishu is a Lecturer (Teaching) in Public Health at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London (UCL), and a visiting senior research fellow at the University of York's Department of Health Sciences. She holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Dhaka Dental College Hospital (2005), an MSc in Dental Public Health (2011) and a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health (2017) from UCL, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship. Her postdoctoral work (2017–2022) focused on mental health and addiction research at the University of York.
Her research prioritizes health inequalities, particularly oral health among children, individuals with mental/physical health conditions, and tobacco control in South Asia. Key projects include a tobacco cessation intervention for diabetic patients in Bangladesh and co-leading efforts to improve oral health in severe mental illness via the Closing The Gap (CTG) network. She is also involved in a clinical trial of Community-Based Behavioral Activation Training (ComBAT) for adolescent depression and contributes to initiatives like the ASTRA project addressing smokeless tobacco in South Asia.
Mishu’s work spans global health policy, epidemiology, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Her projects often emphasize marginalized populations and evidence-based interventions. She has held roles bridging clinical dentistry, research, and public health advocacy, reflecting her commitment to translating science into actionable policy.
Her academic contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed articles focusing on tobacco control, oral health disparities, mental health comorbidities, and climate change impacts on mental health. She has co-authored policy analyses and protocol studies, underscoring her role as both a researcher and an advocate for equitable healthcare access.
