Jennie Elizabeth Lister is a Research Fellow in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York. She joined the university in 2023 while completing her PhD titled "Utility of quantitative methods for intersectionality: a real-world example using the Born in Bradford's Better Start (BiBBS) cohort dataset," which she successfully defended in 2024. Currently, she leads the Horizon Scanning workstream as part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Research Support Service (RSS) National Collaborative, which focuses on identifying and anticipating developments relating to research methods. She also works on the PROLLIT study aimed at improving outcome measurement for patients having lower-limb reconstructive surgery and provides analytical support for various departmental projects.
Dr. Lister earned her BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of York in 2016, followed by an MSc in Applied Health Research in 2017, and completed her PhD in Health Sciences in 2024. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked in the Mental Health and Addictions Research Group (MHARG) as a trial support officer and then as a research fellow, where she contributed to quantitative and qualitative studies within the DIAMONDS research programme.
Dr. Lister's research spans several critical areas in public health and healthcare delivery. Her methodological expertise lies in applied quantitative analysis and data visualisation, with substantive focus on health inequalities, mental health (particularly severe mental illness and its intersection with physical health conditions), and women's health. She has developed significant expertise in science communication, making complex research findings accessible to diverse audiences. Her work frequently examines the intersection of mental and physical health conditions, with special attention to diabetes management among individuals with severe mental illness and the development of patient-centered outcome measures for surgical interventions.
Analysis of Dr. Lister's publication record reveals a strong thematic focus on healthcare for vulnerable populations, particularly those with severe mental illness and co-occurring physical conditions. Her research employs both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, with recent work emphasizing patient-centered outcomes in surgical contexts and chronic disease management. A significant portion of her publications examines methodological approaches to studying health inequalities and developing interventions to address them. Her work demonstrates expertise in systematic reviews, cohort studies, and mixed-methods research approaches applied to real-world healthcare challenges.
Dr. Lister provides analytical leadership across multiple projects including the Horizon Scanning initiative for the NIHR RSS National Collaborative, the PROLLIT study focused on lower-limb reconstructive surgery outcomes, and the CASCADE project examining depression case finding in primary care. Her methodological contributions support evidence-based healthcare improvements across multiple domains of practice.
Dr. Lister is actively involved with the Mental Health and Addictions Research Group (MHARG) and contributes to interdisciplinary teams focused on improving healthcare for populations with complex needs. Her current work connects her with national research networks through the NIHR Research Support Service and positions her at the intersection of methodological innovation and substantive health research.
