Shelly Nielsen

Shelly Nielsen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetic Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI), where she also serves as a licensed and certified genetic counselor. She provides patient care at UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute, Children’s Nebraska, and outreach clinics across the state, including the multidisciplinary UNMC Huntington Disease Center of Excellence.

Her educational background includes an MS in Genetic Counseling from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (2000), and a BA and MT from the University of Virginia (1993). She is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and licensed in Nebraska.

Her research and clinical interests focus on prenatal genetics, general genetics, dysmorphology, and genetic syndromes. She has contributed to key studies on congenital adrenal hyperplasia and P450 oxidoreductase deficiency. Her recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on genotype-phenotype correlations and prenatal diagnosis in rare genetic endocrine disorders.

She played a pivotal role in developing distance education curricula for the Mid-America Genetic Education Consortium and has served as a clinical supervisor for genetic counseling students. Her work in education and outreach demonstrates a commitment to training and expanding access to genetic services.
