Shelagh Abate is an internationally renowned horn player and educator, currently serving as Assistant Professor of Horn in the Brass Department at Berklee College of Music since 2022. She is also a longstanding faculty member at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute since 2003 and a Teaching Artist for the Baltimore Symphony’s OrchKids program, supporting music education in underserved communities.
Her educational background includes a B.A. from Boston College, an M.M. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (Howard W. Lebow Scholar), and an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory (Walkenier Scholar). She has studied with Richard Sebring, Neil Deland, and Laura Klock, and was a fellow at Tanglewood Music Center and the National Repertory Orchestra.
Abate’s research and professional interests focus on horn performance across genres—classical, jazz, commercial, and Broadway—with a strong emphasis on pedagogy, chamber music, and career development for musicians. She is passionate about expanding the versatility of horn players in modern music industries, including film, video games, and audio engineering.
Her recent publications in The Horn Call and Cornucopia explore freelancing, jazz performance for horn, and professional development, reflecting a trend toward practical, interdisciplinary music education and real-world career preparation for emerging artists.

As an educator and mentor, Abate advises a robust studio at Berklee, guiding students in performance, professional portfolio creation, artist statements, and industry readiness. She teaches required Professional Development Seminars for upperclassmen, covering gig etiquette, financial literacy, and visa navigation, particularly for international students. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes authenticity, self-expression, and holistic career preparation.
She is a founding member of the award-winning Triton Brass and performs as third horn with the Greenwich Symphony and principal horn of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra since 1999. Her performance collaborations include work with the MET Orchestra, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and artists like Sting, Lady Gaga, and John Williams. She is a proud artist of Stephens Custom Horns.
