Joseph D. Foley is Professor of Trumpet in the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance at Rhode Island College, where he directs the RIC Wind Ensemble and RIC Jazz Band. He maintains an active international performance career as Principal Trumpet of the Portland Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, and River Oaks Chamber Orchestra.
His educational background includes:

Mr. Foley specializes in trumpet performance across orchestral, solo, and chamber music contexts, with significant contributions to jazz performance and music education. His research interests stem from practical performance expertise, emphasizing brass technique, ensemble leadership, and cross-genre musical interpretation. His career spans performances in over a dozen countries across four continents, reflecting deep engagement with global musical traditions.
His notable honors include:
- Outstanding Brass Player Award (Boston University, twice)
- Grand Prize at six international brass competitions (with Atlantic Brass Quintet)
As an educator, Mr. Foley mentors students through applied trumpet instruction, jazz studies, and ensemble direction at Rhode Island College. He has previously taught at Boston University, Berkshire Summer Music, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and New England Conservatory Preparatory Division, while serving as a global clinician for Conn-Selmer Corporation and Vincent Bach. His leadership extends to developing curriculum for courses including Brass Class, Chamber Music Ensemble, and Concert Jazz Band.
Mr. Foley actively collaborates with professional ensembles including the Atlantic Brass Quintet, Empire Brass, and Burning River Brass, while maintaining performance partnerships with major orchestras worldwide.
