Sharon Macdonald is a Professor of Social Anthropology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where she directs the Hermann von Helmholtz Centre for Cultural Techniques and co-directs the Käte Hamburger Kolleg Centre for Advanced Study. She holds honorary professorships at the Universities of Aberdeen and York, and has held visiting roles in China. Her research focuses on museums, heritage, and memory politics, with significant grants from institutions like the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the EU Horizon programme. She has authored highly cited works including Memorylands: Heritage and Identity in Europe Today and Difficult Heritage.
