Sharon Macdonald is a distinguished academic holding the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship in Social Anthropology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She leads the Centre for Anthropological Research on Museums and Heritage (CARMAH), directs the Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik, and is affiliated with the Institute of European Ethnology. She also holds Honorary Professorships at the Universities of York and Aberdeen, and is a Research Affiliate at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford.
Her research focuses on museums, heritage, and cultural memory, with notable work on 'difficult heritage' (e.g., Nazi-era sites) and the transformation of European cultural identities. She has authored over 20 books and numerous articles, including Difficult Heritage (2009) and Memorylands (2013). Her current projects include the Käte Hamburger Kolleg InHerit: Heritage in Transformation (2024).
Macdonald’s academic career spans institutions like the University of Manchester, Sheffield, and York, where she held a Anniversary Professorship. She has supervised over 20 PhD students, fostering research in museum ethnography, heritage politics, and transnational cultural dynamics.
Her awards include Fellowships from the Royal Anthropological Institute and Royal Historical Society. She serves on prestigious committees such as the Academic Committee of the House of European History and the International Advisory Board of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
