Sharlyn Rhee is a Senior Lecturer in the Program in East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University, affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on comparative literature, Korean and German films/cultures, Asian American literature, and poetics. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s in English Literature from Vassar College.
Dr. Rhee has taught at multiple institutions including Johns Hopkins, Maryland Institute College of Art, Lake Forest College, Hanshin University (South Korea), and the University of Pennsylvania. Beyond academia, she is a visual artist specializing in portraits, with a 2021 catalog titled Second Visions featuring essays by Victoria Cass.
She is associated with the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, Center for Language Education, and The Alexander Grass Humanities Institute. Her interdisciplinary work bridges literary studies and visual arts, emphasizing cultural intersections between Korea and Germany.
