Sujung Kim is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Anthropology at Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (2014) and an M.A. from Korea University (2007). Her research focuses on transnational Buddhist practices in East Asia, emphasizing ritual, myth, materiality, and sensory experience.
Her work employs an interdisciplinary approach to explore how religious networks shape sociocultural meanings. Key projects include her monograph Shinra Myojin and Buddhist Networks of the East Asian 'Mediterranean' (2019), which redefined medieval Japanese religious studies through a sea-centered lens. She is currently developing studies on Korean Buddhist healing talismans and the olfactory dimensions of temple kitchens.
Kim has been supported by prestigious fellowships like the ACLS/Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Fellowship (2021–2022). Her research bridges anthropology, religious studies, and East Asian history, offering innovative frameworks for understanding cultural intersections.
