Dr. Jin Jiang is the Yeung Family Distinguished Visiting Professor of East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University, affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. She holds additional roles as Professor Emeritus at East China Normal University (ECNU) and Adjunct Professor of History at Fudan University. Her academic journey includes teaching at Vassar College, NYU Shanghai, and ECNU, where she founded the Center for Gender and Cultural Studies (2005) and the Shanghai History Research Center (2008).
Dr. Jiang earned her Ph.D. in East Asian History from Stanford University (1998) and an MA in Modern Chinese History from East China Normal University (1984). Her research explores the intersection of women/gender, popular culture, and Shanghai’s sociohistorical dynamics. Notable works include Women Playing Men: Yue Opera and Social Change in Twentieth-Century Shanghai (2009/2015) and a collaborative sourcebook on Shanghai’s entertainment advertisements (2015).
Her scholarly contributions span translations of key texts in cultural history (e.g., Lynn Hunt and Natalie Davis) and editorial leadership in academic series. Awards include the Radcliffe-Yenching Fellowship (Harvard, 2011–12) and research fellowships at institutions like Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (2014).
Dr. Jiang’s advising efforts focus on graduate students researching Shanghai’s urban culture and gender studies. Her grants include international collaborations and residencies, reflecting her transnational academic engagement.
She actively contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives at Johns Hopkins, including the Hopkins-Nanjing Center and the Alexander Grass Humanities Institute.
