Education
- PhD-level training in Music Theory, Yale University Department of Music, co-instructed by Allen Forte and Leon Plantinga.
- Advanced studies in Musicology/Composition Theory, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, under Qian Yiping and Yang Liqing.
- Composition and Composition Technology Theory, Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, with Xu Mengdong.
Research Interests
Professor Jiang’s scholarship spans composition theory, music psychology & cognition, and music therapy. He integrates empirical methods such as EEG and psychological experimentation with rigorous theoretical analysis to investigate how tonal structures, timbre and musical expectation engage human emotion and cognition. His work often bridges Western analytical traditions (Schenker, set theory, GTTM) with contemporary interdisciplinary perspectives.
Publications & Creative Output
Across 2020-2024 his peer-reviewed articles cluster around neural mechanisms of tonality, interdisciplinary music theory, and post-tonal analysis. Earlier work supplies detailed analytical studies of Russian romantic art song, modernist literature-influenced form, and minimalist structures. These outputs reflect a trajectory from traditional music analysis toward cognitive science-informed approaches.
