Dr. Shannon Gravelle is an Assistant Professor of Music in Choral Studies at Lawrence University's Conservatory of Music, where she also serves as Co-director of Choral Studies and Music Education faculty. She holds the Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg Concert Choir Chair at the Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival, a prestigious program for high school musicians. Her research focuses on conducting pedagogy, identity influences on learning, and equity advocacy in music education. She actively champions silenced voices in music history, with specialties in Sergei Taneyev, Johannes Brahms, and Barbara Strozzi.
Education: D.M.A. in Choral Conducting (University of Iowa), M.M. in Choral Conducting (California State University Long Beach), B.A. in Music with minors in Music Education and Religion/Theology (Luther College). She has conducted choirs across 8 U.S. states, presented at national conferences, and led K-12 teacher professional development. A dedicated advocate, she chairs diversity initiatives for Wisconsin ACDA and leads WiCHEd, supporting women in choral higher education.
Professional affiliations include ACDA (Midwest Student Activities Chair), National Collegiate Choral Organization, and NAfME. Beyond academia, she plays piano/guitar, sings, runs, and enjoys baseball—having even backed the Rolling Stones as a vocalist.
