معرفی
Shane Johnson is a tenured Research Scientist at Arizona State University's School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering with over 30 years of experience in compound semiconductor materials and device growth, fabrication, and design. His expertise spans optoelectronic devices, compound semiconductors, epitaxial growth, and semiconductor device physics, supported by extensive grant funding from DOD, NSF, and industry partners.
Johnson earned his PhD in Physics from the University of British Columbia (1996) and BSc in Physics from Simon Fraser University (1991). His educational foundation underpins his technical leadership in semiconductor research and development.
His research focuses on III-V bismide materials for next-generation optoelectronic applications, high-efficiency multi-junction photovoltaic solar cells for space systems, and IR/THz lasers enabling advanced communication, sensing, and imaging technologies. He pioneers epitaxial growth techniques for compound semiconductors and investigates fundamental semiconductor device physics, with applications spanning defense, renewable energy, and communications infrastructure. His work integrates molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with in-situ characterization to develop novel materials systems.
Johnson maintains an active research portfolio through thesis supervision (MSE/EEE 599/792/799 courses) and substantial external funding, including DOD-AFRL projects on space applications and OSEMI Inc. collaborations for infrared detector development. His grant management spans fundamental materials research to dual-use defense applications.
His scientific recognition includes:
- IEEE Region 6 Outstanding Engineer Award
- IEEE Phoenix Section Engineer of the Year Award
- IEEE Senior Membership
- NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship
- British Columbia Graduate Research Award
- NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship
Johnson actively shapes his field through leadership in international conferences, serving as Organizing Chair for the 14th International Conference on Mid-IR Optoelectronics and Steering Committee Chair for the International Workshop on Bismuth-Containing Semiconductors. His laboratory operations center on ultra-high vacuum MBE systems for advanced semiconductor growth and characterization.
