Shaheda Begum is a Lecturer in Education at the University of Cumbria, teaching on Undergraduate and Postgraduate Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes. She is currently in her fourth year of a Professional Doctorate in Education, researching the experiences of British Bangladeshi Muslim women in higher education in England, adopting an intersectional perspective. Her academic background includes a BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies, a Graduate Teacher Programme with QTS, and an MA in Education, where her research focused on the impact of reading for pleasure on literacy attainment.
With a primary teaching background, Shaheda has held roles such as Teaching and Learning Responsibilities (TLR) for Mathematics, History, Geography, and Religious Education. She served as a Key Stage 1 learning leader and led CPD training on critical pedagogy and systemic barriers to effective teaching. Additionally, she implemented and monitored the 'Daily Supported Reading' (DSR) program in a primary school.
Her research interests center on social justice, ethnic minority communities' educational experiences, and the negotiation of hybrid identities within educational systems. She is a member of the EDIW (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Wellbeing) monitoring group at the University of Cumbria, reflecting her commitment to equity in education.
