Finola Utton is a Senior Lecturer in Primary English and the Primary English subject lead at St Mary's University. She teaches on programs including the Primary Education Work-based Routes, BA Hons in Primary Education with QTS, and PGCE in Primary Education with QTS. She also serves as a link tutor in partnership schools and is a school governor in Hammersmith and Fulham, focusing on SEND governance and curriculum development.
Her research interests center on literacy education, particularly reading/writing for pleasure, diversity in teaching, and teacher identity. She co-runs an Open University/UKLA Teachers Reading Group and has collaborated with The British Library on student identity projects. Her work on student writers earned a Walpole Prize commendation and publication in the UKLA 4-11 magazine.
Finola has presented at conferences including TEAN, UKLA International Conferences, and the Teaching and Learning Festival. Previously, she worked at the University of Cumbria and taught for 13 years in a London primary school, where she led Key Stage One and contributed to senior leadership. She holds a Master’s Degree in action research on spelling strategies.
