Sergio (Serge) Rey is a Professor of Geography at San Diego State University (SDSU), affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of Geography's Environment, Society, and Technology division. His research focuses on spatial data science, geocomputation, spatial inequality, regional science, and open science. Rey is a distinguished Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Spatial Econometrics Association, and the Regional Science Association International.
Rey has secured funding from prestigious organizations like the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He served as Editor of Geographical Analysis (2015–2018) and International Regional Science Review (1999–2018). As Founding Director of the Center for Open Geographical Science and co-creator of the open-source PySAL library, he has globalized geocomputational education through workshops and software development.
His research interests emphasize spatial inequality dynamics, GIScience innovations, and computational tools for urban and regional analysis. Notable contributions include the geosnap package and Pyneapple-R, advancing spatial regionalization and neighborhood analysis. Rey’s work bridges academia and practice, addressing pressing issues like urban segregation, demographic trends, and environmental policy.
- Awards: AAAS Fellowship, Spatial Econometrics Association Fellowship, Regional Science Association International Fellowship
- Labs/Teams: Center for Open Geographical Science, PySAL development team
Rey’s grants and collaborations highlight interdisciplinary approaches to spatial challenges, emphasizing reproducibility and open science principles.
