Atsushi Nara is an Associate Professor of Geography at San Diego State University (SDSU), affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of Geography. He holds academic positions since 2011, including roles as a Research Scientist and Lecturer at institutions like the University of Maryland and Arizona State University. His research focuses on Geographic Information Science (GIScience), spatiotemporal data analytics, geocomputation, and applications in urban dynamics, disaster response, and public health. Nara leads the Center for Human Dynamics in the Mobile Age and collaborates with the Center for Information Convergence and Strategy.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Geography from Arizona State University (2011), an M.S. from the University of Utah (2005), and a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Shimane University (2000). His work spans over 50 refereed journal articles, book chapters, and conference presentations, addressing topics like evacuation modeling, social media analytics, and spatial epidemiology. Awards include the 2019 Michael Breheny Prize for Best Paper and multiple grants from NSF, NIH, and other agencies.
Nara’s research integrates geospatial technologies with computational methods, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration. Notable projects include wildfire behavior analysis, health disparities studies, and geocomputational education initiatives. His work has practical applications in disaster management, urban planning, and healthcare equity.
He supervises graduate students in GIScience, Big Data Analytics, and related fields, contributing to over 20 completed and ongoing theses and dissertations. Nara’s grants total over $4 million, supporting projects like improving Mexico biomass burning estimates and analyzing homeless population dynamics at the U.S.-Mexico border.
