Jed Long is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Western Ontario. His research focuses on GIS/GIScience, GPS tracking, and spatial ecology, with applications in wildlife movement analysis, human mobility, and sports analytics. He leads the Geospatial Analysis Lab and teaches courses such as GEO 3210 (Geocomputation) and GEO 3224 (Spatial Ecology and GIS).
Dr. Long’s work integrates novel spatial analysis techniques with real-world datasets, including GPS tracking data and volunteered geographic information (VGI). He has pioneered methods for analyzing movement patterns in both human and animal populations, contributing to fields like conservation biology and urban planning. His research often emphasizes open-source software and reproducibility in geospatial science.
- Education: PhD in Geography (specializing in GIScience)
His recent publications explore topics such as evacuation modeling during wildfires, geomagnetic navigation in birds, and mobility changes during the pandemic. He has supervised over 12 graduate students, focusing on interdisciplinary projects involving ecology, technology, and socio-spatial dynamics.
Dr. Long is actively involved in collaborative initiatives like the OpenGPS platform and the Healthy Environments and Active Living for Translational Health (HEALTH) project. His lab develops tools like the wildlifeDI R package to analyze wildlife interactions from tracking data.
