Taylor Oshan is an Associate Professor of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he focuses on developing quantitative spatial analytical methods. Promoted from Assistant Professor in Fall 2024, his work bridges spatial statistics, geographic information science, and urban informatics. He earned a Ph.D. in Geographic Information Science from Arizona State University (2017), and prior degrees from Hunter College (M.A.) and the University of Delaware (B.A.).
His research centers on multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) and spatial interaction models (SIM), emphasizing scalable methods for urban mobility, public health, and transportation systems. He is a leader in open-source software development, including the PySAL and MGWR libraries, and advocates for replicable geospatial research practices. Recent projects include modeling obesity determinants in Phoenix and analyzing transport disruptions in NYC.
Oshan’s academic journey includes overcoming a spinal cord injury in 2018 that left him paralyzed, adapting with assistive technology to continue his research and teaching. He actively mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, emphasizing technical proficiency and interdisciplinary collaboration. Future work includes international collaborations in spatial demography and a book on multiscale spatial analysis techniques.
His funded projects and software contributions underscore his commitment to advancing geospatial data science, with applications in urban systems, computational social science, and policy-relevant research.
