Serena Voltz serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at Carthage College, specializing in tuba instruction since fall 2022. She concurrently holds the position of Principal Tuba with the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra and maintains an active freelance career through engagements with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Racine Symphony, Lakeshore Symphony, and Festival City Symphony, alongside diverse chamber ensembles including brass quintets (Gargoyle Brass, Genuine Brass) and tuba-euphonium quartets.
Her educational foundation includes:
- Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University
- Master of Music from DePaul University
where she studied under renowned pedagogues Rex Martin, Floyd Cooley, and Gene Pokorny.
Voltz's professional focus integrates instrumental mastery with community education, emphasizing expanding the tuba's role in contemporary chamber music. She actively advocates for underrepresented voices as a member of the 5th Wave Collective—dedicated to performing works by women, nonbinary, and trans composers—and developed arranging skills during the pandemic, specializing in popular and movie music adaptations for student ensembles. Her pedagogical work spans public school instruction across Chicago's northwest suburbs and community programs at The People's Music School and Merit School of Music.
