Kevin J. Stees is a Professor of Tuba and Euphonium and Director of the James Madison University Brass Band at James Madison University, where he has served for 31 years. He holds music degrees from the University of Illinois and Arizona State University. His career spans solo performances, chamber music, conducting, and music education.
Education: B.M. and M.M. from University of Illinois and Arizona State University, respectively. His expertise includes tuba and euphonium performance, brass ensemble conducting, and music pedagogy.
Research interests focus on brass instrument performance, orchestral and chamber music collaboration, and the development of brass band repertoire. He has performed with ensembles like the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and Calgary Philharmonic, and leads the JMU Brass Band in international performances.
- Conducted the JMU Brass Band at the Kennedy Center and Brucknerhaus Linz.
- Member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association and North American Brass Band Association Board.
Recipient of the Second International Brass Congress Tuba Solo Competition prize and finalist in multiple solo competitions. He also directs the award-winning Massanutten Brass Band.
Active in community and academic music organizations, including the Madison Brass quintet-in-residence and Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival Orchestra.
