Sebastian Wolf is a Senior Scientist at ETH Zurich's Department of Environmental Systems Science (since 2015) and holds a Marie Curie Research Fellow position. He previously conducted postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley (2011–2015) and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (2007–2010). He earned a Ph.D. in Ecosystem Sciences from ETH Zurich (2010) and an M.Sc. in Geography from Dresden University of Technology (2006).
His research focuses on biosphere-atmosphere exchange processes, particularly carbon, water, and energy fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems under climate change and drought scenarios. He employs eddy covariance, remote sensing, and modeling techniques across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions. Key projects include studies in Panama, California, and Switzerland, emphasizing carbon-water interactions, drought effects on ecosystems, and large-scale flux upscaling.
His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, such as soil erosion modeling, mountain pine beetle infestation detection, and landscape fragmentation analysis. Wolf has received notable awards including the GEWEX Poster Award (2014) and Marie Curie Fellowship (2012–2015).
Teaching includes guest lectures on Earth system topics at Wageningen University (2015), UC Berkeley's FORESCALE Summer School (2015), and the University of Bern’s micrometeorology course (2015). He collaborates with the Baldocchi Group at UC Berkeley’s Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management.
