Dr. Gerbrand Koren is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, specializing in environmental sciences. His research examines carbon and water cycles, focusing on CO₂ exchange between atmosphere and biosphere in tropical regions, particularly Amazon forest responses to droughts.
Methodologies combine stable isotopes, remote sensing (SIF, NIRv), and modeling (GAIAFLUX, CarbonTracker) to constrain carbon fluxes. Recent work explores novel applications of D¹⁷O measurements and integrated approaches for ecosystem analysis.
Research projects include ACT-NOW (Amazon carbon uptake transitions), EXCITED (CO₂ exchange in tropics), and WELCOME (water-energy-land impacts). He contributes to measurement campaigns and advocates for open science through software and data sharing.
- Awards: Royal Meteorological Society Editorial Award, Institute of Physics Review Awards
- Grants: NWO projects on Amazon research infrastructure and space-based observation
- Educational development: Jupyter Notebook learning experiences, AI in geoscience education
