Sean Ireton is an Associate Professor of German and Graduate Advisor in the Department of German at the University of Missouri’s College of Arts and Science. His work focuses on intersections between philosophy and literature, particularly ecocriticism, exploring German, North American, and Scandinavian writers and thinkers.
Education: PhD in Germanics from the University of Washington, MA in German from UC Davis, and BA in German and Spanish from Washington College.
Research Interests: Ecocriticism, German Idealism, Environmental Humanities, and the cultural history of nature. He is completing a monograph German Literary and Philosophical Ecologies and editing A Companion to the Works of Adalbert Stifter.
Teaching: Courses include Nature Philosophy and Environmental Literature, Conceptions of Nature in German Idealism, and Nietzschean literature and philosophy.
Publications: Includes An Ontological Study of Death: From Hegel to Heidegger (2007) and edited volumes on mountains in German culture. His recent work examines Stifter’s bioregionalism and Norwegian deep ecology.
