Her research focuses on 20th Century Austrian and German Literature with specialized expertise in Adalbert Stifter, Franz Kafka, R. M. Rilke, Robert Musil, and contemporary authors including Ingeborg Bachmann. Schiffermuller's methodological approach encompasses poststructuralism, Kulturwissenschaft, intermedial studies, and the intersections of literature with philosophy (Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Nietzsche), psychoanalysis (Freud, Jung), and epistolary culture.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent scholarly engagement with literary theory, philology, and text/image studies, particularly examining representation of otherness, dream narratives, and illness in German literature. Her work demonstrates interdisciplinary connections between literary studies, philosophy, psychology, and cultural history.
Schiffermuller serves on the editorial board of the journal 'Cultura tedesca' and has been principal investigator for numerous research projects since 2002, including the 'Salzburger Bachmann Edition' critical edition project and 'Eurotales' migration studies in 20th-21st century Europe.
