Barbara Agnese is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at Université de Montréal, specializing in 20th-century Austrian literature, Holocaust writing, and literary multilingualism. Her research examines identity formation in exilic writing, cross-cultural textual patterns in European literary magazines, and the intersections between literature and philosophy.
Her expertise encompasses the works of Ingeborg Bachmann, Nelly Sachs, and post-war German-language authors. Agnese investigates how multilingual writers navigate linguistic boundaries and how trauma manifests in literary expression. She serves as editor for the Salzburg Edition of Ingeborg Bachmann's works.
Agnese is an accomplished translator of philosophical and literary texts between German, Italian, and French. Her scholarly translations include works by Wittgenstein, Rorty, Jelinek, and Bachmann. She teaches courses on literary evolution, comparative studies, and translation theory.
