Scott E. Page is the Leonid Hurwicz Collegiate Professor of Complex Systems, Political Science, and Economics at the University of Michigan, where he is also affiliated with the Center for Political Studies and the Center for the Study of Complex Systems. Additionally, he serves as an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute, and held visiting roles at Caltech and UCLA. His academic journey includes a BA in Mathematics from the University of Michigan (1985), MA in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin (1988), and a PhD in Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School (1993).
Page’s research focuses on the multifaceted roles of diversity in complex systems, exploring how diversity drives productivity, robustness, and innovation. His work spans disciplines including economics, political science, computer science, and public health, with notable contributions to collective intelligence, institutional design, and the empirical analysis of diversity’s impact. He is the co-founder and co-editor of the interdisciplinary journal Collective Intelligence.
His awards and honors include the University of Michigan’s Distinguished University Professorship (2019), election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Science, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. His book awards include a Choice Award for The Model Thinker, an Axios Award for The Diversity Bonus, and recognition for The Difference as a Princeton Classic (2025).
