Saumitra Jha is an Associate Professor of Political Economy at Stanford's Graduate School of Business (GSB), with courtesy appointments in Economics and Political Science. He is a Senior Fellow at the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Affairs and leads the Stanford Conflict and Polarization Lab. His research focuses on political economy, ethnic conflict, and historical institutional dynamics, blending economic analysis with political and historical perspectives.
Education: BA from Williams College, MPhil in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and PhD in Economics from Stanford University. He previously held roles at Harvard University and Princeton University's research centers.
Research Interests: Jha investigates how financial markets influence political attitudes, ethnic conflict dynamics, and historical institutional reforms. His work spans topics like post-colonial economic resilience, the role of heroism in political outcomes, and the interplay between trade, institutions, and ethnic tolerance. Recent studies include analyzing Brexit's populism resistance through financial exposure and exploring Hindu-Muslim peacebuilding in South Asia.
