Anna Grzymala-Busse is the Michelle and Kevin Douglas Professor of International Studies in Stanford University's Department of Political Science. She serves as Director of the Europe Center, Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution (courtesy title). Her research focuses on state development and transformation, religion's influence on politics, post-communist politics, populism, and informal institutions. She authored three books: Redeeming the Communist Past, Rebuilding Leviathan, and Nations Under God, and has received prestigious fellowships from the Carnegie and Guggenheim Foundations. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary political dynamics, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Catholic Church's role in state formation. She advises on policy through institutional leadership and remains active in both academic and policy circles.
Her research demonstrates a focus on how historical institutions shape modern political systems. Articles from 2022–2025 emphasize themes like medieval religious roots of European states, colonial institutions, and illiberal populism. These works highlight her interdisciplinary approach, combining comparative politics with historical and religious studies. Awards and fellowships underscore her scholarly impact. At Stanford, she leads the Europe Center, fostering research on transnational issues, and contributes to policy-oriented research at Freeman Spogli and Hoover.
