Kathryn Stoner is a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and a Professor (by courtesy) in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. She also holds senior fellowships at the Hoover Institution and the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. Her research focuses on Russian politics, post-communist transitions, and authoritarianism. She previously taught at Princeton University and held visiting positions at Columbia and McGill Universities.
Stoner earned a BA and MA in Political Science from the University of Toronto and a PhD in Government from Harvard University.
Her research explores topics such as Russian regional governance, democratic transitions, and the dynamics of authoritarian regimes. Notable works include Local Heroes: The Political Economy of Russian Regional Governance (1997) and Russia Resurrected: Its Power and Purpose in a New Global Order (forthcoming). Her articles analyze Putin's Russia, authoritarianism, and geopolitical relations.
Stoner has held fellowships at Harvard and the Woodrow Wilson Center, and her work bridges academic research with policy-oriented analysis. She contributes to international policy programs and has advised on governance and foreign assistance strategies.
